Over 300 pets treated as VIPs in Cebu City

MORE than 300 pets were able to enjoy free services and VIP (Very Important Pet) treatment from the Cebu City Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF) during the celebration of the 12th Asong Pinoy Day and Local Rabies Awareness on Sunday, July 17, 2022.DVMF head Dr. Jessica Maribojoc told SunStar Cebu Monday, July 18, that anti-rabies vaccination, deworming, and vitamins were given to a total of 358 pet dogs and cats at the Plaza Sugbo.Aside from giving veterinary services, the event also highlighted the local breed of dogs that are commonly known as asong pinoy (aspin) or “irong bisaya” in the native tongue.“The goal is to encourage people to be responsible pet owners and at the same time raise awareness that aspins are just as important as purebred dogs,” said Maribojoc.Games like “locate your treats” were also introduced in the program that was participated in by the pets and their owners. The DMVF also displayed some aspins in the venue to encourage residents to adopt or raise this breed of dogs.According to Maribojoc, two persons had already shown interest in adopting the dogs and had assured their office that they will take good care of them.Maribojoc has said many people are already keen on having aspin as their pets since these breeds of dogs are more resistant to diseases. The DMVF also lauded the City Council for creating a committee on animal welfare that will allow more programs for the well-being and protection of animals in the city. The creation of animal welfare desks in every police station in Cebu City is also being eyed by the DMVF to improve the government’s response to animal abandonment and abuse.
