Pagasa Visayas exec: Be wary of landslides amid incessant rains

THE public is urged to take precautionary measures as landslides may occur amid the incessant rains in the Visayas, particularly in Cebu within this week.

The state weather bureau’s Visayas chief Alfredo Quiblat Jr. told SunStar Cebu that the light to moderate rain that is currently affecting Cebu Island is due to the trough of the low pressure area (LPA) which was last spotted 285 kilometers east southeast of Davao City as of 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, 2023.

The LPA is less likely to develop into a typhoon, according to Quiblat, the weather services chief in the Visayas of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

Quiblat said the Visayas may experience occasional heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

“Bantayan pod ani ang landslide kay magsige og ulan humok ang yuta (We must watch out for landslides because the soil will become soft when it is raining,” he said.

He stressed that flooding in prone areas is less likely to happen since this will only occur if heavy rainfall will continue.

Quiblat said Cebu will experience improved weather by Wednesday, Jan. 25.
