PH loses to Japan in AFC U17 Asian Cup Qualifiers

THE Philippines suffered its second straight defeat after a 3-0 loss to heavily favored Japan in Group A of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U17 Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers on Oct. 3 at the Prince Mohammed Stadium in Zarqa City, Jordan.

The Philippines put on a gallant stand against Japan and kept the match scoreless most of the first half.

Japan finally broke into the Philippines’ defense with a 43rd minute goal by Yutaka Michiwaki.

Japan’s lead was 2-0 just before the halftime whistle after Michiwaki scored a brace two minutes later.

Striker Homare Tokuda finished off the Philippines by scoring Japan’s third goal in the 85th minute.

Meanwhile, Turkmenistan settled for a 1-1 draw with Syria.

Titov Denis gave Turkmenistan the lead in the 64th minute. However, substitute Homam Mahmoud scored the equalizer in the 72nd minute.

Turkmenistan remained at the top with six points, followed by Japan in second place with three points. Syria is third with two points, host Jordan is fourth with a point and the Philippines is at the bottom with no points.

Japan faces Turkmenistan tonight, while the Philippines is up against Jordan.
