VICTIMS of the massive fire that hit five sitios in Barangay Punta Princesa, Cebu City on June 11, 2022, will be receiving P10,000 to P20,000 in financial aid from the City Government.Portia Basmayor of the Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS) told SunStar Cebu Sunday, June 19, 2022, that their office will be requesting the City Council to adopt a resolution appropriating P16 million for the cash aid.Basmayor said each of the residents who owned houses that were destroyed or sustained major damage will receive P20,000.The City will give P10,000 to each of the owners whose houses incurred only slight damage.Absentee owners or those who had their houses rented by other people will also receive P10,000. The same amount will be given to each of the renters and families living under one roof.Basmayor assured the fire victims that the financial aid will be distributed within the month since they are still validating the list of beneficiaries.According to Basmayor, the master list was made public to the victims so that they can scrutinize and find out if there are individuals who had been listed but were not affected by the fire.Aside from giving the cash aid, Basmayor said the DSWS has provided meals to the fire victims for seven days. The DSWS is also set to distribute rice and other essentials.People’s organizations and other private entities have also extended assistance to the victims, she added. The fire destroyed 525 houses, damaged 14 houses and slightly damaged three houses.Since the site of the fire has been reblocked, Basmayor said the owners of houses that were spared from the fire but were affected by the reblocking will also receive cash assistance from the City Government. The Cebu City Government has said that a medium-rise building will be constructed in the barangay to provide condominium-style housing for those who will be displaced because of the reblocking.
