San Miguel tries to stay alive in PBA quarterfinal match vs. Meralco

THE San Miguel Beermen will try to keep their title bid alive when they battle the Meralco Bolts in the PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals on Friday, March 18, 2022, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Beermen need a win to force a rubber match for a spot in the semifinals. San Miguel head coach Leo Austria is well aware of the expectations for his powerhouse squad, which now has NBA veteran Shabazz Muhammad as their import.“Do-or-die,” said Austria on the league’s official website. “We want to be able to go to the next round so we have to give this game our all.”The Beermen seek to replicate their 115-110 win over the Bolts last March 5. It was an incredible come-from-behind victory for San Miguel, which trailed by as much as 26 points. However, behind the scintillating shooting of Muhammad, who scored 45 of his 57 points in the second half, San Miguel was able to pull off the win.Austria said he doesn’t want his team to get off to a slow start against a dangerous Meralco squad that is no doubt out for revenge after that heartbreaking loss.“I’m certain they won’t hold back this time,” shared Austria. “We cannot afford to have another slow start. We need to execute our gameplan for the entire 48 minutes,” Austria added. On the other hand, Bolts head coach Norman Black is happy to have a twice-to-beat advantage, which means they only need to win once to move on to the semifinals.“At this point, I’m just happy to get that twice-to-beat because we’re gonna need it against San Miguel,” said Black.
