SanRem to build plaza

SAN Remigio in northern Cebu will finally have a public plaza 160 years since the municipality was founded.

Mayor Alfonso Pestolante revealed the plans to SunStar Cebu in an interview on May 9, 2023, saying this is a way to preserve their heritage and entice more businessmen to invest in the town.

“For the longest time, only by this time we will be having our public plaza,” Pestolante said.

According to the mayor, out of the 44 municipalities and nine cities within Cebu Island, only San Remigio does not have a public plaza since its founding in 1863.

“The big project that my administration will be undertaking right now is the realization of the most-awaited, very long, overdue realization of our public plaza,” he said.

Pestolante said he wants to create a place where locals, particularly kids and senior citizens, may congregate on weekends, especially on Sundays.

“It is a necessary landmark every local government unit should have, so that is why I want it to be realized,” he added

He believes that while it would bring the community together, businesses will also sprout in the area, boosting the local economy.

The public plaza will be located at the back of Artemio Masbate Sports Complex in Barangay Poblacion, the exact location where the grand ritual showdown of the Lapyahan Festival will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.

The Municipal Government intends to complete the plaza with construction projected to start before the end of the year.
