Self-help therapy card deck a ‘tool for meditation’ during pandemic

THIS social enterprise for mental health is bringing self-help therapy into your hands and to our frontliners.

“My Soul Brief-Case” is a self-help therapy card deck meant to be your companion through the curveballs, challenges or brief cases you may encounter in your day-to-day life. With 50 unique cards containing sentence prompts and illustrations, they are designed to help you drive insight and reflection.

In designing “My Soul Brief-Case,” co-founder and creator of the cards, Gisa Paredes as a licensed psychologist, used techniques in cognitive behavioral therapy, reality therapy, mindfulness, gestalt and solution-focused brief therapy.

The cards serve as a tool for self-talk and meditation when you spend time to reflect, process and better understand yourself and specific experiences. Its design also allows you to approach any given situation in multiple ways with the variety of cards in your hands.

“Think of it this way, if this was a book, it would confine you to doing things chapter after chapter. But with a card deck, you can shuffle, re-arrange, and approach your challenge in more than 200 different ways.” said Gisa.

The pandemic has affected our lives in more ways than one and it has had a major impact on people’s mental health, including and most especially the frontliners in healthcare.

Having to face health risks, high stress, fatigue, grief, and despair on a daily basis, there is a growing need to address their concerns on their mental and emotional well-being. With the ratio of mental health workers per population in the Philippines remains very low, access to mental health care professionals, services and strategies for self-care are few and far between.

Through a collaborative project with other small enterprises, “My Soul Brief-Case” joins hands in this campaign to uplift and show appreciation to frontliners through its Buy 1, Give 1 campaign. For every purchase of a card deck, another goes to a team of healthcare workers in hospital Covid wards. In this prolonged health crisis, it is essential to put to light the urgent need to invest in Mental Health.

This year’s Mental Health Day Campaign slogan is “Mental health care for all: let’s make it a reality.” Raising awareness and sharing tools and resources are important to encourage Filipinos to look out for yourself and your mental health in these tough times.

Co-founder, April V. Ong Vaño shared that “through this campaign, we hope to drive conversations around mental health through practical resources like My Soul Brief-Case as well as bring access to these cards to frontliners who may need them too.”
