Smart to boost internet connection in Liloan

TELECOMMUNICATIONS firm Smart Communications will build five cell towers in the northern town of Liloan to boost internet connectivity and to support the thriving population in the area.

In May, Smart will erect a cell tower located in the mountain barangay of San Roque in Liloan town, Cebu.

This was what Alexis Winters, Smart regional head for Central Eastern Visayas, said during the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, April 19, 2021 at the Golf and Leisure Estate in Barangay San Roque.

The ceremony was attended by local officials headed by Liloan Mayor Christina Garcia Frasco and Fifth District Rep. Duke Frasco.

Winters said each cell tower is LTE-capable and can be upgraded to 5G, expanding the internet capability and speed to provide residents with faster and reliable internet connection, particularly to the people living in far-flung mountain barangays in Liloan.

Aside from San Roque, Smart will also build cell towers in the barangays of Santa Cruz, Yati, Catarman and Jubay in the town of Compostela.

Most towers will service the residential and commercial users in the area.

Cell towers take six to nine months to build.

The first cell tower will be situated in an elevated area in the Golf and Leisure Estate owned by Duros Land Properties Inc.

Fe Barino, president and chief executive officer of Duros Land, thanked Smart and Mayor Frasco for choosing their location as it will boost the plans of the golf course to host international tournaments in the following years once development is completed.

Mayor Frasco said internet accessibility is part of “human rights” especially for residents in the mountain barangays.

Aside from the groundbreaking, Smart also donated 200 LTE pocket Wifis which the mayor said will be distributed to Liloan scholars.

In his speech, Representative Frasco stressed the importance of the cell towers to the progress of Liloan, especially since it is striving to be declared a city. (REV / JOB)
