MOTORISTS travelling within Mandaue City may soon have to be aware on how fast they drive on the streets.
This after a proposed ordinance that will implement a speed limit for all vehicles in City was passed on second reading before the Mandaue City Council on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021.
Mandaue City Councilor Jimmy Lumapas, who authored the ordinance, is confident that it will be passed on third reading in their next session.
In the proposed ordinance, cars, motorcycles, and similar motor vehicles can only drive along national primary roads with a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour (kph); 70 kph for national secondary roads, and 60 kph for national tertiary roads.
Motor vehicles traveling along provincial roads can only travel up to 40 kph while those traveling along barangay roads and crowded roads can travel up to 20 kph.
For trucks, buses, tricycles, and other similar motor vehicles, they can only travel up to 50 kph along the open roads; 30 kph along provincial roads and 20 kph along barangay roads and crowded roads.
Lumapas said he proposed the ordinance after receiving a report that around 2,400 road accidents occurred from January 2020 to December 2020, killing 20 people and injuring 500 others.
He said speeding is one of the contributors why road accidents occur in the city.
Lumapas said once the ordinance is enacted, the City will be able to allocate a yearly budget for the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue City (Team) to buy speed guns.
He said they will propose a P2 million allocation for the purchase of speed guns which will be included in next year’s annual budget. (KFD)
