Talisay City eyes creating office for spaghetti wires eradication

THE Local Government Unit of Talisay City, Cebu is eyeing to create a special office that will focus on eradicating spaghetti wires in the city.Jomari Rubio, the executive assistant of Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas Jr., met with different representatives of telecommunication providers on Thursday, March 3, 2022, to address the longtime problem of unorganized wirings.Rubio asked the telcos’ representative why their technicians can install new lines for their customers but cannot take the time on bundling the wires that are already dangling.A representative from Globe Telecom said their contractors and operators are following standards and procedures on installing new lines. The telcos’ representative suggested to Rubio that the City should create a technical infrastructure committee that will oversee the eradication of spaghetti wires in the city. The committee will coordinate with different departments in the City such as the engineering office and the traffic operations and development office.Cebu City’s actionIn Cebu City, Councilor Jerry Guardo told SunStar Cebu on March 3, that the ongoing “Spaghetti Wire Eradication Program” of the city is still at 60 percent.Guardo said they were having a hard time since most of the telcommunication companies have been focused on their restoration of services after the disruption brought about by Typhoon Odette (Rai), which struck Cebu on Thursday evening, Dec. 16, 2021.The councilor, who chairs the city’s committee on infrastructure, added that they are closely monitoring the progress of the program. The program’s focus right now is on major thoroughfares since there are still broken or leaning poles in the interior portions of the city that have not been restored yet, said Carillo.Guardo added that these telco providers are dependent on the energization by the Visayan Electric Company. He further said that he has a proposed ordinance that will pilot an underground cabling system for utilities in the South Road Properties (SRP).“We are now entertaining alternatives or options to go underground because of what we learned from the experience of the devastation of Typhoon Odette,” said Guardo.Guardo said three private investors have already submitted different designs that will be considered once the amendatory ordinance is approved by the City Council.“This is going to be the future, we are converting SRP to be a smart city nga wala nay overhead makita nimo, tanan naka underground na,” said Guardo.Guardo added if the implementation of underground cabling system in SRP would be successful, it would be replicated in different areas in the city.
