Team formed to probe Basak San Nicolas ‘morgue’

THE Cebu City Legal Office has formed a team to look into possible violations of St. Bernard Funeral Homes after it was found storing cadavers in a warehouse.

At least 16 bodies were found in an abandoned building that was used as a morgue in Barangay Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City on Tuesday, Aug. 17.

Councilor David Tumulak, who conducted the inspection on Tuesday, said 10 of the bodies were placed inside an ordinary freezer, while six were placed on the floor.

Vice Mayor Mike Rama tasked the City Legal Office on Wednesday, Aug. 18, to submit recommendations within 24 hours for the City to act on the matter.

But lawyer Rey Gealon said they could not give yet any recommendations pending the investigation reports from the City Health Department.

He tasked the City Health Department, Business Permit and Licensing Office, Office of the Building Official and other agencies to look into the matter.

Gealon added that based on initial investigation, the St. Bernard Funeral Homes violated Section 93 of the Sanitation Code of the Philippines with regards to handling the cadavers. (PAC / LMY)
