The elections are over. So what happens next?Our vigilance is the best support we can do under the incoming administration of presumptive president Bongbong Marcos. A critical citizenry or eyes and ears for the new government to listen to the voice of the people (sans trolls), especially of the suffering and downtrodden, is indispensable to progress and fruitful democracy.No head of state had ever succeeded without such a kind of support recognized and honored under his/her rule like, for example, in America from George Washington to Donald Trump. Having ears to listen and having a heart, more than anything else, can spell the triumph in governance of any president.Politics, crookedness, selfish agenda, fake news, bullheadedness and brutality are the usual culprits for a nation’s downfall.Nothing good can come out of despotism and ruthlessness.Abraham Lincoln who believed in God and the Bible had ears (and heart) for the cries and lament of his countrymen, hence he championed the abrogation of slavery among them. Wikipedia stated: “Lincoln led the nation through the American Civil War and succeeded in preserving the Union, abolishing slavery, bolstering the federal government, and modernizing the US economy.”Singapore bloomed under the wise governance of its first Prime Minister, but not without help of eyes and ears and an “opposition” that made its voice heard in proper forums. And that was the difference between Lee Kuan Yew and Ferdinand Marcos Sr., notwithstanding their similarity as strong-willed, intelligent leaders. Lee had a vision and the support of his entire country, while Marcos had only his “ambition” and the fawning, subservience and servility of sycophants and loyalists.In our country, our new sets of political leaders need us, the people, more than ever to be watchdogs over the likely excesses and abuses that they may commit. I like what spokesman Vic Rodriguez said lately, the Marcos administration would be inclusive “regardless of political race, color or belief… We are not enemies… Let us support our newly elected leaders.”Yes, we will, but with our sight and senses intact and working.
