Tell it to Sunstar: Parking violators

By Charry Calledo, Barangay San Antonio, Cebu City

The Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) must be serious in its campaign to go after drivers who park their vehicles illegally.

By “illegally,” I mean parking where they’re not supposed to, particularly where’s there’s a big sign that says “no parking.”

I have been seeing a lot of the yellow clamping device attached to a vehicle’s wheel these past couple of weeks, especially in the uptown area.

So employees of the CCTO must be hard at work to address this problem, unless they’re conducting a fundraiser to help the mayor achieve his Singapore-like vision for the city.

If the case is the latter, then the CCTO will be surprised to discover that it has been sitting on a cash cow all along.

All its employees have to do is to go out every day and clamp away. Everybody knows that legit parking is hard to come upon, especially as you head to the downtown area. So finding violators is a walk in the park. No pun intended.

So why are they ignoring the cars and the motorcycles that park on the sidewalk on both sides of Osmeña Blvd.?

These are blatant violations when you consider that they block the way of pedestrians, most of whom are students from two public schools in the vicinity.

Is it because the cars and the motorcycles probably belong to police officers who work or have business at the Police Regional Office 7 headquarters or the Abellana Police Station?

If that is the case, does the law not apply to our men and women in uniform?
