Tell it to SunStar: Revive private schools that shut down

Manila Congressman Joel R. Chua has asked the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) to “have a clear and sustainable program to revive the private schools that shut down.”“Ched should have some sort of PDIC-like subsystem wherein failed schools can be placed under receivership and rehabilitation,” Representative Chua suggested. He prodded the Ched to ask the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp. and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas “for advice on how to help private schools that shut down or are about to fail.”Chua noted how the pandemic and resulting community quarantines “forced many private schools to shut down. Many of these private schools are family-owned and have had a largely social mission or service orientation but lack the financial and logistics to continue operating.”He said, “some were too structurally weak to survive the pandemic. Some did not have institutional adaptability to the new economic environment and the pandemic was the last straw that caused their collapse.”
