U-22 Azkals out of SEA Games

THE Philippines Under-22 Azkals ended its campaign in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games after a disappointing 3-0 defeat in the hands of perennial whipping boys Timor-Leste on Thursday night, May 4, 2023 at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Promising East Timorese striker Mouzinho Barreto de Lima gave Timor-Leste the early lead after scoring a goal in the 14th minute.

Luis Figo Ribeiro made it 2-0 for East Timor with a goal in the 55th minute and Elias Joao Mesquita finished off the Philippines with a goal in the 90th minute.

The Philippines dropped to last place in Group A with a point from two losses and a draw. The Azkals have been eliminated from the tournament due to the costly defeat.

Indonesia is at the top of Group A with six points, followed by host Cambodia with four points. Timor-Leste moved up to third place with three points and Myanmar is fourth also with three points but is behind on goal difference.

The top two teams of Group A will advance to the semifinals along with the top two squads of Group B.

Meanwhile, the World Cup-bound Philippines Women’s National Team looks to bounce tonight, May 6, against Malaysia at the RCAF Old Stadium in Phnom Penh.

The Filipinas dropped its tournament opener after losing to Myanmar, 1-0, due to a late penalty.

The Filipinas are currently in third place in Group A with no points, while Malaysia is last also with no points and behind the Philippines on goal difference. Defending champion Vietnam sits at the top with three points and is slightly ahead of second place Myanmar on goal difference. (EKA)
