Vice Ganda’s ‘Partners in Crime’ rules MMFF 2022 box office

LOVE him or hate him but host-comedian and box office superstar Vice Ganda is not one to think twice about speaking his mind when asked about a controversial topic or issue. Nor is he type who will sugarcoat answers just to make the interviewer feel comfortable.

Asked why moviegoers should watch his Metro Manila Film Festival 2022 entry, “Partners in Crime,” he told the Cebu media at a recent press conference: “First of all, so that my movie will become a hit. It would be too plastic of me to cite any other reason. This is not an advocacy, this is still business.”

Vice Ganda went on to say he does not have a flop movie to his name and wants his record to remain that way. A list of all top-grossing MMFF films has six Vice Ganda movies in the top 10, with 2018’s Fantastica taking the top spot with P596 million.

Despite his solid record, Vice Ganda admitted being both excited and nervous about how “Partners in Crime,” which also stars Ivana Alawi, will be received by the audience. He’s aware that moviegoers might still be apprehensive about going back to watching movies inside the cinema.

As it turns out, Vice Ganda has nothing to worry about. He has maintained his magic at the box office with “Partners in Crime,” attracting long queues and sold-out screenings at the cinemas when it opened on Christmas Day.

According to unofficial reports, the film which was directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina and co-produced by Star Cinema and Viva Films, is currently No. 1 among the eight official entries, reportedly raking in P31 million on its first day.

During the mall show at SM City Cebu after the presscon, we had a glimpse of Vice Ganda’s undeniable charm and appeal to the “madlang people.” Fans patiently waited for their idol, gamely participated in the See Tinh Dance Challenge, and screamed at the top of their lungs when he finally appeared on stage and did his signature Lady Gaga medley.
