Villamor & Fabiosa: Queen of Christmas

In an earlier article, we wrote that Mariah Carey’s song “All I Want for Christmas,” which was released in 1994, is extensively played on streaming services and on the radio during the Christmas season. It has topped the Billboard Hot 100 Chart every year since 2019. On March 10, 2021, Mariah Carey filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office an application to register “Queen of Christmas” as a trademark covering 16 classes of goods and services including perfumes, musical recordings, protective masks, jewelry, books, bags, beverage glassware, clothing, Christmas tree decorations, food, drinks, online streaming platform, and entertainment services. CBS News reports that when the “Queen of Christmas” application was published in July, Christmas songwriter Elizabeth Chan filed an Opposition thereto, claiming that she is a full-time songwriter who has likewise been dubbed “The Queen of Christmas.” Chan also said she is the only singer-songwriter who exclusively writes original holiday songs.
