Worker killed in collapse of building construction

ONE man was killed and another injured after a residential building being built in Barangay Apas, Cebu City collapsed Saturday morning, May 22, 2021.

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) officer-in-charge Ramil Ayuman said the accident, which involved only the two workers, happened on Lapulapu St. past 11:30 a.m.

Rescuers first found a badly bruised 41-year-old Abel Bautista. He was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center for treatment.

At 12:31 p.m., rescuers found the second construction worker, who was identified as Romeo Waniwan. Waniwan was already dead.

According to Ayuman, the victim’s head was still bleeding when they recovered his body.

The Office of the Building Official (OBO) immediately served a suspension order to stop any construction activity in the area.

OBO head Florante Catalan said the contractor will have to explain the incident and submit an incident report.

Catalan said the contractor may face criminal charges if the investigation shows it committed lapses.

He said the OBO has to evaluate the incident report first before it can lift the suspension order.

In an official press statement, PLD Construction, the contractor of the project, said it will coordinate with the OBO on the investigation.

The PLD also stated that full assistance will be given to the families of Bautista and Waniwan.

The Cebu Landmasters Inc., the project developer, pledged to provide additional support and required the contractor to comply with all necessary measures. (JJL)
