Zamboanga, Sangiao to see action in ‘ONE Fight Night 9’

DENICE Zamboanga, No. 3 ranked women’s atomweight, and Jhanlo Mark Sangiao are both seeing action in “ONE Fight Night 9 – Nong-O vs. Haggerty” on April 21, 2023 at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

The 26-year-old Zamboanga is up against Brazilian Julie Mezabarba in one of the featured fights.

Following back-to-back losses to Ham Seo Hee, Zamboanga is building her way back up in the atomweight division in the hopes of earning a title shot against ONE women’s atomweight champion Angela Lee, a fight which she has been longing for quite some time now. Zamboang successfully bounced back after defeating hard-hitting Chinese Lin Hequin on Dec. 2 in Manila.

Zamboanga is still up there in the rankings behind No. 1 Stamp Fairtex and No. 2 Ham.

The 30-year-old Mezabarba is eager to bounce back after losing her last two contests. She lost to Stamp by unanimous decision and to Filipina Jenelyn Olsim by split decision.

Zamboanga is 9-2 with three wins by submission and two wins by stoppage, while Mezabarba is 9-4-1 with three wins by stoppage.

On the other hand, Sangiao, of the dreaded Team Lakay, takes on Argentinean Matias Farinelli in the show’s curtain-raiser.

After earning a contract with ONE Championship in 2021, the 20-year-old Sangiao had an impressive organization debut with a first-round rear-naked choke submission of Indonesian Paul Lumihi. He followed up that win in 2022 with another first-round rear-naked choke finish on Anacleto Lauron.

The 38-year-old Farinelli, who just debuted in pro MMA last year, won all five of his fights and won the Circuito Argentino de MMA bantamweight belt in 2022. He won Argentina-based MMA organization’s bantamweight belt with a guillotine choke on Matias Hernandez last Nov. 12.

Farinelli is a skilled wrestler and grappler and won all of his fights by submission.

Sangiao and Farinelli were supposed to face each other in Manila last year. However, Farinelli was forced to pull out after contracting Covid-19 before the fight.

Sangiao is 5-0 along with four submission victories and a stoppage, while Farinelli is also 5-0.

The main event features ONE bantamweight Muay Thai champion Nong-O Hama (265-54-10) defending his belt against former ONE flyweight Muay Thai titleholder Jonathan Haggerty (19-4). (EKA)
