13,000 Filipinos develop kidney disease every hour

EVERY hour about 13,000 Filipinos develop chronic kidney disease, latest data revealed.

Though chronic kidney disease can be slowed down with medication, it cannot be totally cured, according to the Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN).

Thus, PSN urged Filipinos during the observance of World Kidney Day on Thursday, March 9, 2023, to take care of their kidneys to avoid diseases.

PSN president Dr. Maaliddin Biruar told SunStar Cebu how important it is to educate the public regarding looking after their kidneys to avoid diseases.

“Eventually when we have chronic kidney disease we go on dialysis and we do not want that to happen. So we should be promoting kidney health for all,” said Biruar.

According to the latest data from the National Kidney and Transplant Institute, one Filipino develops chronic kidney disease (CKD) every hour, or roughly 120 Filipinos per million people.

“All of us need to be informed of the importance of our kidneys to our general health. Everyone needs to be aware of the risk factors and signs and symptoms of a kidney disease, and see a doctor for proper diagnosis even those without symptoms but are at risk,” said Biruar.

The PSN organized the forum at the Archdiocesan Museum in Cebu City, with the goal of educating the public on kidney functions and chronic kidney disease, including its risk factors and causes, signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures and guidelines for maintaining healthy kidneys.

“Majority have no symptoms, especially in early CKD, and so it is best to check with your doctor if you think you are at risk,” said Dr. Binuar.

Risk factors, he said, include having a high blood sugar, high blood pressure and heart disease, and obesity, smoking, being over 60 years old, and a family history of kidney-related problems. (KJF)
