Pope Leo is reportedly disrupting tradition at the Vatican, moving into a freshly renovated papal apartment and bringing four housemates, according to reports.
The Telegraph reported that Leo intends to share his new, extensively renovated residence, making this the first instance in modern history of a pope choosing communal living in the palace’s official accommodations.
“It appears novel to me,” Vatican correspondent Iacopo Scaramuzzi informed the UK publication. “I am unsure if this considers the Church’s extensive history, but it certainly does in the modern age.”
Reports indicate that among those joining him is his Peruvian personal secretary, Father Edgard Rimaycuna, frequently observed alongside Leo. Father Edgard, a trusted adviser and close friend since the Pope’s initial pastoral years in South America, is considered one of Leo’s most devoted companions.
Scaramuzzi further stated, “In my view, Leo is certainly distinct from Francis, yet not profoundly so. He is relocating back to the papal apartments, though not in a regal manner.”
This communal living arrangement is reportedly consistent with the community-oriented principles of the Augustinians, the friar order to which Leo is affiliated.
This move also contrasts with Pope Francis, who declined to relocate to the papal apartments upon his ordination in 2013, opting instead for a .
The , where the apartment is situated, dates back to the 15th century and additionally contains papal offices, museums, and the Sistine Chapel.
This week, Italian media outlet La Repubblica reported that the apartment’s renovations are continuing.
The 10-room suite, situated on the palace’s third floor, has also undergone repairs to address water infiltration and humidity following years of vacancy.
The Telegraph stated that the Vatican has remained “tight-lipped regarding the recent restructure,” despite technicians having been engaged for several months.
Following Francis’s death in April, the papal apartments were ritually sealed before being unsealed for refurbishment. Since that time, Pope Leo has resided in the Sagrestia building, close to St. Peter’s Basilica.
This is not Leo XIV’s first contemporary choice. Born to a working-class immigrant , he experienced a modest upbringing before joining the priesthood.
He informed Vatican News in 2024 that he endeavors to remain grounded.
He stated, “A bishop is not meant to be a minor prince reigning in his domain, but is authentically called to be humble, to be near the people he serves, to journey with them, and to endure alongside them.”
Online reactions to Leo’s relocation have been varied. Earlier this year, author James Martin posted on X: “We must trust Pope Leo’s judgment in this and all matters — and extend our best wishes for his new abode!”
