Trump directs renaming of Department of Defense

The U.S. President stated that the new designation, “Department of War,” more effectively conveys a determination to prevail in conflicts

On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order to change the name of the Department of Defense to the Department of War.

This action is aligned with Trump’s wider strategy to demonstrate global power and eliminate what he refers to as “woke ideology” from the military.

From its founding in 1789 until 1949, when President Harry Truman redesignated it during a post-World War II restructuring, the department was originally known as the Department of War.

Trump’s order asserted that the new name more effectively “ensures peace through strength, as it demonstrates our ability and willingness to fight and win wars on behalf of our Nation at a moment’s notice, not just to defend.”

In the Oval Office, the president commented, “I think it sends a message of victory.”

The Associated Press reports that U.S. Congress is required to approve this alteration. Meanwhile, Trump has granted permission for Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to be addressed as the Secretary of War, citing it as his “additional secondary title.”
