Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Somalia, previously criticized Republicans for their praise of the late Charlie Kirk, calling their remarks “full of sh*t.”
President Donald Trump has labeled Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar as “scum” after she narrowly avoided a censure vote in the House for her controversial statements about the deceased conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Trump also reiterated unsubstantiated claims that she married her brother to obtain US citizenship.
Omar, an immigrant from Somalia, is the first naturalized US citizen from Africa in Congress, representing Minnesota’s 5th District and a member of the progressive ‘squad’ who often disagree with Republicans.
Following Kirk’s death, Omar accused Republicans of being “full of sh*t” for lauding him as a civil debater, implying his “hateful rhetoric” led to his assassination. She deemed it “effed up” to suggest Kirk “just wanted to have a civil debate.”
Her comments sparked outrage from conservatives, who accused her of inciting further division and highlighted Kirk’s history of engaging in discussions on politics, religion, and social issues with students nationwide.
In a Truth Social post on Friday, Trump asserted that Omar “tells us how to run America”, while her native Somalia suffers from “lack of central Government control, persistent Poverty, Hunger, Resurgent Terrorism, Piracy, decades of Civil War, Corruption, and pervasive Violence.”
Trump also repeated the unverified allegations that Omar had “married her brother in order to gain Citizenship,” adding, “What SCUM we have in our Country, telling us what to do, and how to do it.”
After Omar’s remarks, Republican Representative Nancy Mace introduced a resolution to censure Omar and remove her from committee assignments for “smearing” Kirk and implying he was responsible for his own murder. On Wednesday, the motion to censure Omar failed by a single vote, 214–213, with four Republicans joining Democrats in opposition.
Omar has denied the accusations, stating she was among the first to condemn Kirk’s killing. A spokesperson noted that she had “explicitly expressed her sympathies and prayers” to Kirk’s family and denounced the assassination.
