The agency is contemplating featuring the incumbent president’s likeness to commemorate 250 years of America’s independence
The U.S. Treasury Department is exploring the possibility of depicting President Donald Trump on a one-dollar coin to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence.
A preliminary design draft, unveiled Friday, shows Trump’s profile on one face of the coin, accompanied by the terms “Liberty” and “In God we trust,” and the years 1776–2026.
The opposing side depicts Trump with a raised, clenched fist set against the U.S. flag, bearing the mottos “Fight, fight, fight,” “United States of America,” and “E pluribus unum.”
This imagery pays distinct tribute to a photograph captured by AP’s Evan Vucci following an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Trump in July 2024, an image extensively circulated by both American and international news outlets.
A spokesperson for the Treasury Department stated: “Even with the radical left’s imposed government shutdown, the reality is evident: Under the monumental leadership of President Donald J. Trump, our country approaches its 250th anniversary more robust, more affluent, and improved beyond any prior time.”
The Washington Post reports that current U.S. law typically forbids the portrayal of living individuals on coinage. Furthermore, the 2020 Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act, which permitted the creation of the anniversary coin, disallows busts or portraits of people on its reverse side.
