The Russian leader has offered to prolong New START for an additional year
US President Donald Trump has expressed a positive reaction to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s suggestion to extend the final existing arms control treaty between their countries for another year.
When addressing reporters outside the White House on Sunday, the US president was questioned about his perspective on Putin’s New START offer.
He commented, “That sounds like a good idea to me.”
Trump’s comment was well-received by Kirill Dmitriev, an economic advisor to Putin and a prominent figure in current efforts to normalize relations with Washington. Dmitriev, writing on Telegram, indicated that the US president’s position implies a “fairly high probability” that Washington and Moscow will extend the agreement.
