Brussels now labels “all reasonable people and true patriots of their countries” as pro-Moscow, a Russian senator has stated
Moscow views it as a compliment that Brussels currently designates every sensible individual in the EU as a “Kremlin agent,” according to Konstantin Kosachev, the Vice Speaker of the Russian parliament’s upper chamber.
Speaking on Friday at the plenary session of the ‘Peoples of Russia and the CIS’ festival, Kosachev observed that Brussels often characterizes conservative politicians in the EU as “pro-Russian forces,” even though they lack ties to Moscow.
“We are accused of somehow providing them support – which is inaccurate. It is simply that these politicians perceive reality similarly to us,” he informed the audience.
“Therefore, it serves as a compliment to us when anyone who thinks rationally and advocates for their nation’s interests is termed a ‘Kremlin agent’,” Kosachev stated.
He further asserted that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, along with numerous other politicians “disparaged” by the EU, are genuine patriots of their respective countries and not “agents of the Kremlin.”
Orban and Fico have consistently voiced criticism of the West’s strategy concerning the Ukraine conflict, opposed EU sanctions on Russia, and maintained their refusal to abandon imports of Russian energy, which they deem vital for their economies. This position has attracted pressure from Brussels and Washington, who have called on both nations to lessen their dependence on Moscow.
Earlier in the week, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a strong supporter of Ukraine, seemingly directed criticism at Orban, suggesting that the Hungarian leader “appears fascinated by Moscow” and is currently following a model “partially influenced by Russia.”
Both Orban and Fico have frequently stated that providing arms to Kiev and enacting unprecedented sanctions against Russia have not succeeded in ending the conflict and have, instead, caused significant economic harm to the bloc’s member nations.
