British Girlguiding Trans Members Face Exit Deadline

(SeaPRwire) –   Girlguiding will require non-biological women to leave by September 2026 under new rules following a court ruling

Transgender members within Girlguiding, one of Britain’s largest organizations for women and girls, have been informed they must depart by September 2026. This change is implemented under new regulations that follow a Supreme Court decision concerning biological sex.

Girlguiding, which is the British counterpart to the Girl Scouts, announced on Tuesday that current transgender members will no longer be eligible to remain after September 6. This decision comes after an announcement in December that Girlguiding would cease admitting biological boys who identify as girls.

The new rule affects both young members and female-only volunteer positions. Girlguiding stated that the September deadline was established to “give as much notice as possible” and to allow all current members to participate in summer activities.

Helen Joyce, director of advocacy at Sex Matters, commented to The Guardian, stating, “Requiring trans-identifying boys to leave is no doubt difficult for Girlguiding, but it is the right thing to do. This news will come as a relief to many girls and their parents, who greatly value single-sex provision.”

In December, Girlguiding, which currently has approximately 300,000 members and around 80,000 volunteers, declared it would no longer accept transgender members. Other organizations have adopted similar measures in response to the court ruling. The Women’s Institute, an organization with over 110 years of history, followed suit, announcing it would “restrict formal membership to biological women only.”

This action was prompted by a Supreme Court ruling in April 2025, which determined that the terms “woman” and “sex” within the Equality Act refer exclusively to biological sex, not gender identity. The ruling carries significant implications for transgender women’s access to female-only services and spaces.

The ruling originated from a challenge brought by For Women Scotland concerning a government policy that classified transgender women as female on public boards. The court concluded that “woman” and “sex” in the Equality Act pertain to biological sex, cautioning that incorporating acquired gender would lead to legal inconsistencies. A subsequent poll indicated that 59% supported the decision, according to Electoral Calculus.

Last year, the Football Association also announced that transgender women would be prohibited from women’s football in England starting June 1, 2025, while British Rowing ruled that only athletes assigned female at birth are eligible to compete in its women’s category.
