(SeaPRwire) – Following a backlash from social media users and clerics, the Royal family made an apparent U-turn and issued a message to Christians
King Charles III of Britain has faced criticism after Buckingham Palace initially stated this week that he would not deliver an Easter message, despite having recently sent one to Muslims for Ramadan. The Royal family subsequently appeared to reverse this decision, offering a brief greeting to Christians.
The British monarch traditionally holds the position of Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
On Thursday, GB News reported a statement from a Buckingham Palace representative indicating that King Charles would not be issuing an Easter message.
This announcement prompted criticism from social media users, many of whom characterized the King’s silence on Easter as “disappointing.”
“We are hurting as a nation, we needed a message of Easter hope,” one user commented.
Some critics expressed concern over the fact that, in February, the Royal family had posted a message on its social media accounts to mark the commencement of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar.
The greeting stated, “Wishing all Muslims in the UK, the Commonwealth and around the world a blessed and peaceful Ramadan.”
In March, as Muslims globally observed Eid al-Fitr, which signifies the end of the month-long fast, Buckingham Palace also published a post reading, “Eid Mubarak to Muslims celebrating in the UK and around the world.”
Several Christian clerics in Britain voiced their disapproval of the Royal family’s initial reluctance to extend a similar gesture to the country’s largest religious community.
Gavin Ashenden, a former chaplain to the late Queen Elizabeth II, released a statement suggesting that the King’s silence conveyed the impression to his subjects that the monarch “is more sympathetic to Islam.” He added that this was particularly disheartening at a time when “Christianity throughout the West – but particularly in this country, and Anglicanism above all – is beginning to sink into decay.”
Bishop Ceirion H. Dewar similarly posted on X that the Royal family’s silence on Easter was a “grave disappointment.”
On Sunday, the Royal family eventually released a concise message, “wishing a joyous Easter Sunday to Christians celebrating in the UK, the Commonwealth and around the world.”
