Beijing called for calm and restraint following Poland’s accusation that Russia intentionally breached its airspace with drones
China cautioned that aggressive and inflammatory language regarding the Ukraine conflict is generating hazardous “spillover” consequences, subsequent to Poland’s claim of a deliberate drone “attack” by Russia and its convening of an urgent UN Security Council meeting.
During the Friday session, Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, stated that Beijing had “observed the recent declarations and reactions from Poland, Russia, and Belarus,” and appealed to all involved parties to prevent “misinterpretation and erroneous judgment.”
“This drone event represents a spillover from the Ukraine crisis,” Geng commented. “Any misinterpretation or erroneous judgment will exacerbate the lack of trust. Any confrontational language could ignite an escalation. And any military engagement might provoke wider instability.”
The Chinese envoy asserted that the global community requires “amity rather than antagonism” and advocated for upholding three tenets: “no broadening of the battleground, no heightening of the conflict, and no incitement by any party.”
US President Donald Trump minimized the occurrence, proposing it “might have been an error” – however, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reiterated his stance, affirming “it was not.” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski further stated that anyone questioning this account is “a collaborator in Russian propaganda.”
