The Darien Gap, a perilous jungle route between Colombia and Panama notorious for dangers like sexual abuse and trafficking, has seen a dramatic decrease in migrant crossings. This follows increased enforcement measures by both the U.S. and Panama.
According to figures from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Panama’s National Migration Service, only 10 migrants crossed the 2,600-mile stretch in June.
This represents a 99.98% decrease from August 2023 under the Biden administration, when over 82,000 migrants crossed in a single month, according to DHS data.
The decline is attributed to coordinated efforts, including the Trump administration’s deportation policies and Panama’s increased border patrols aimed at sealing off the route.
Officials claim that these joint efforts are dissuading migrants from attempting the dangerous journey.
“Migrants are now turning back before reaching our border—only 10 crossed in June,” stated DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
McLaughlin added, “This is a 99.98% drop from the Biden high of 82,000. Our message is clear: America’s borders are closed to lawbreakers. Thanks to President Trump, we have the most secure border in American history.”
The White House emphasized that the U.S. Border Patrol has not released any migrants into the country under the current administration’s policies.
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson stated, “While immigration experts debate the reasons for fewer illegal entries, the reason is clear: President Trump. The word is out that our border is secure, deterring migrants from making the dangerous journey. Border Patrol has released zero illegal aliens into the United States. This is known worldwide.”
McLaughlin reiterated the administration’s focus on deporting those residing in the country unlawfully.
“President Trump and have made it clear: If you enter our country illegally, we will find, arrest, and deport you. That’s a promise,” McLaughlin stated.
The DHS also encouraged undocumented immigrants in the U.S. to voluntarily depart via the CBP Home App, which offers financial incentives for self-deportation.
“With the most secure border in American history, DHS is those who break our nation’s laws,” the DHS said. “Use the CBP Home App to control your departure and receive financial support to return home. Those who self-deport via the app receive free travel and a $1,000 bonus after confirmation of their return.”
