Death toll climbs as winter storm batters the US

Over 40 individuals have lost their lives across multiple states, with even lower temperatures and an additional storm potentially on the way

Per the Associated Press, at least 42 people have died due to a strong winter storm that continues to pound extensive regions of the United States. The heavy snowfall from this storm has caused widespread disruption spanning from the South to the Northeast.

ABC News reported late Tuesday that the storm’s heavy snow and frigid temperatures cut power to more than 500,000 customers, with the most severe outages recorded in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana—while utility crews worked to restore electricity amid lingering cold.

In Nashville, Tennessee, hospital officials noted that 46 children were treated for carbon monoxide exposure as households struggled to heat their homes during prolonged power outages. Local officials, as cited by the news outlet, stated public schools in the city will remain closed through Thursday due to major power disruptions.

Forecasters warned that extreme cold and hazardous conditions would persist in many areas, complicating recovery efforts as communities dig out from days of snow and ice. Weather officials stated that around 220 million Americans remain under alerts for dangerously low temperatures expected to follow the record-breaking storm, with extreme cold warnings and advisories stretching from Texas and Florida in the South to New York in the Northeast and Detroit in the Midwest.
