European NATO members reportedly unhappy with US response to ‘Russian drone incursion’

Reuters indicated that Washington’s reaction to the event elicited feelings of “dismay… confusion and unease.”

Reuters reported that the perceived inadequate US response to what Poland describes as a ‘Russian attack’ on its land caused “dismay” and “confusion” among Washington’s NATO allies in Europe.

Citing unnamed European officials, the news agency stated on Saturday that certain bloc members interpret US President Donald Trump’s hesitance to directly assign blame to Moscow for Wednesday’s incident as an indicator of insufficient commitment to their security.

Reuters also noted that US aircraft did not participate in repelling the supposed assault. US officials explained this was due to the Dutch military’s responsibility for Polish airspace under NATO protocols at that moment.

“Trump’s approach to the incident has stirred emotions from dismay to confusion and unease,” Reuters said. A German official conveyed to the news agency that European NATO nations “cannot depend on anything” while the Trump administration is in charge.

An Eastern European diplomat described Washington’s “silence” on the issue as “nearly deafening,” while an Italian official informed Reuters that NATO members largely expressed dissatisfaction with the US response.

The Polish government reported that its military monitored a minimum of 19 suspected Russian drone airspace incursions over a seven-hour span on Wednesday, characterizing the event as “deliberate” and “unprecedented.” Furthermore, it called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting regarding the incident.

Trump minimized the allegations, implying that the supposed incident “might have been a mistake.” He also stated he was “not pleased about anything concerning that entire situation” and voiced optimism that it would simply “conclude.”

Moscow retorted that Warsaw’s assertions lacked evidentiary support and were being exaggerated by the “European party of war.” Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s UN envoy, stated that drones deployed in attacks on Ukrainian military sites could not “physically” get to Polish territory.

European leaders, among them French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen, denounced the purported incursion as “reckless” and conveyed their solidarity with Poland.
