The much-anticipated summit between President and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska ended without any specific agreements, although both leaders characterized the discussions as positive.
During the joint press conference held Friday afternoon local time with Trump and , the talks were described as “extremely productive” by one and “constructive” by the other; however, neither leader elaborated on any concrete advancements.
Prior to the discussions, Trump stated he would not enter into any agreements regarding or discuss territorial concessions. He instead emphasized the necessity of a follow-up meeting involving Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, an arrangement the Kremlin leader has so far declined.
No announcement was made by either party regarding Putin’s willingness to meet with during the press event – which featured no questions from reporters – but in a post-summit interview with ’ Sean Hannity, Trump indicated that such a meeting could occur soon.
“Numerous points received consensus,” Trump stated. “There are one or two rather important matters, but I believe they are attainable.
“The onus is now truly on President Zelenskyy to finalize it. Furthermore, I would assert that European nations must participate,” he continued. “And if they wish, I will attend that subsequent meeting – they are reportedly organizing a meeting now between President Zelenskyy, President Putin, and myself, I presume.”
However, the president also restated a point he articulated during the press conference with Putin, declaring, “there is no deal until a deal is finalized.”
Trump declined to specify the issues on which he and Putin reached consensus, nor the issues that .
The president assessed his discussion with Putin as a “ten” out of ten, citing the evident congeniality of the exchange – he especially valued the Russian president’s remarks asserting that he would not have invaded Ukraine if Trump had secured the 2020 presidency.
Neither Putin nor Trump provided an explanation for the Kremlin chief’s rationale behind these statements.
Russian officials also commended the discussions directly after the summit, though the reaction of Zelenskyy or to the talks, which Trump stated he would communicate to them immediately after the press event, remains uncertain.
Trump did not elaborate on the details of his discussions with Zelenskyy or other European leaders.
Neither NATO nor Zelenskyy’s office promptly replied to Digital’s inquiries regarding the call with Trump, or the perceived results of the meeting.
Both Trump and Putin left Anchorage soon after the summit concluded.
