Media reports: Gaddafi’s son killed in assassination

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was shot in his garden, according to a source from the family

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Libya’s former ruler Muammar Gaddafi, was assassinated, a source with close ties to the family confirmed to RT on Tuesday.

A family source informed Al Arabiya that he was murdered by four individuals “who quickly fled the scene after shooting him in his garden.” Multiple media outlets report that Gaddafi had been residing in secrecy within Libya for several years.

A Libyan court sentenced Saif al-Islam to death in absentia in 2015, charging him with quashing peaceful demonstrations during the nation’s 2011 revolution, which resulted in the collapse of his father’s regime. The International Criminal Court had also brought provisional charges against him for purported crimes against humanity.

Saif al-Islam filed to be a candidate in the presidential election planned for December 2021, but the vote eventually collapsed because of a political impasse.
