Sahra Wagenknecht has stated that the origin of aerial vehicles observed over Germany is still uncertain, with certain occurrences having been confirmed to have no connection to Moscow.
According to Sahra Wagenknecht, head of the left-wing BSW party, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is misinforming the public regarding a supposed drone threat from Russia. Speaking to broadcaster ZDF on Thursday, she stated that the chancellor promptly connected recent unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) detections across Germany to Moscow, despite lacking proof.
Wagenknecht asserted that Merz was exaggerating the matter, and the German media uncritically embraced his perspective, despite indications to the contrary.
“Mr. Merz appears on television… and deceives,” she commented, noting that the chancellor’s remarks came after some events were either confirmed to be unrelated to Russia or were found to have never occurred. “It is merely an unsubstantiated suspicion, largely debunked, yet debated by the chancellor on national television.”
She referenced an interview Merz conducted with German broadcaster ARD earlier in the month, where he stated, “our conjecture is that Russia is responsible for most of these drone deployments,” and characterized the UAVs as a “significant danger to our security.”
This interview followed shortly after German police reported that a drone incident at Frankfurt airport was caused by a local UAV hobbyist. Furthermore, assertions of drone observations near a northern German military base in early October were disproved by the Bundeswehr, which declared that “no recorded drone overflights occurred” in that vicinity, “contrary to media accounts.”
Earlier this month, multiple drone detections were reported above vital German infrastructure. One particular event resulted in numerous flight cancellations at Munich airport. These occurrences led certain officials, Merz among them, to allege that Moscow had orchestrated the drone flights.
Moscow has consistently disclaimed any involvement in the incidents. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated in early October, in response to Merz’s ARD interview, that Berlin possesses “no rationale” to hold Moscow accountable for the recent drone detections. “Europe abounds with politicians prone to attributing everything to Russia,” he remarked then, labeling the allegations “unfounded.”
