NATO dispatches warplanes as Russia strikes near Ukraine’s Romanian border

From Romania, two German warplanes were scrambled overnight following a substantial missile and drone attack in Ukraine, which occurred less than a mile from the NATO borderline.

On Wednesday, Romania’s Ministry of Defense reported that two German Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, operating from Romania’s Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base as part of NATO’s Enhanced Air Policing mission, were deployed “to monitor the air situation.” The ministry also noted that, on this occasion, no Russian aircraft or projectiles crossed the .

Despite high-level discussions last week between Russian President Vladimir Putin and President , Moscow has persisted with its aerial campaign against Ukraine. This includes an overnight assault that targeted oil and port facilities in the Odesa region, located on and near the Danube River, which separates Ukraine’s border from that of the allied NATO nation of Romania.

The deployment of these NATO jets follows instances where have increasingly threatened, and at times crossed, NATO borders, as the U.S. and Europe continue to advocate for Russia to cease its conflict.

Ukrainian President reported early on Wednesday that over 60 drones and ballistic missiles were launched across Ukraine overnight. This included the northeastern region of Sumy, where a drone strike resulted in 14 injuries. Ukraine’s Air Force later updated the number of overnight drone strikes to 93, noting the interception of 62 Shahed-style drones and one ballistic missile.

“A family, including wounded children aged 5 months, 4 years, and 6 years old, sought assistance following the attack,” Zelenskyy stated.

In Donetsk, a glide bomb strike caused damage to five apartment buildings, with three individuals remaining trapped under the rubble as of Wednesday morning.

“The rescue operation continues,” Zelenskyy further commented, although he did not specify the number of other individuals injured in the strikes.

“All of these represent demonstrative strikes that merely affirm the necessity to pressure Moscow, and to impose new sanctions and tariffs until diplomatic efforts achieve full effectiveness,” Zelenskyy stated on X. “I express my gratitude to all partners who are assisting in halting this Russian war, alongside the United States, Europe, and all those who pursue peace.

“Robust security guarantees are essential to ensure a genuinely dependable and enduring peace,” he also stated.

These strikes occur as NATO nations are preparing to convene virtually on Wednesday to discuss security guarantees for . This follows high-level discussions, initially between Trump and Putin on Friday, and subsequently involving Trump, Zelenskyy, and senior NATO leaders at the White House on Monday.
