Police respond to shooting incident at Michigan synagogue

A gunman was discovered dead after driving into Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, and firing at a security guard. The assault triggered a large-scale response from local and federal authorities.

Police and federal agents converged on the synagogue Thursday, answering what FBI Director Kash Patel described as an “apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation.”

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard stated the gunman approached a security guard, leading to an exchange of gunfire, and noted that no one besides the assailant was injured. The suspect crashed through the synagogue’s front doors before “something ignited” in his vehicle, causing the place of worship to fill with smoke.

Bouchard said the man was found dead inside the vehicle, and it remained unclear initially if he perished from burns or a gunshot wound.

“Everything that was supposed to happen, happened,” he remarked. “Security did their job, and then the responders did theirs.” Bouchard added that investigators are sweeping the building for possible explosive devices and that a motive for the attack has not yet been determined.

This event occurred less than an hour after a shooter opened fire at Old Dominion University in Virginia, leaving two people with serious injuries. That gunman was killed in the incident, though it is not known if he died by suicide or police gunfire.
