Five other individuals sustained injuries in a fire that destroyed a postal bus, with police probing a suspected intentional act
A bus fire in western Switzerland has resulted in six fatalities and left five others wounded, with authorities stating it may have been an intentional act, as reported by media citing Fribourg cantonal police.
The fire broke out on a regional postal bus in Kerzers, Switzerland, on Tuesday, leading to the vehicle’s total destruction.
Police spokesman Frederic Papaux informed reporters that investigators are assessing if the blaze stemmed from a “voluntary act.”
“At this stage, we have elements suggesting a deliberate act by a person who was inside the bus,” stated Frederic Papaux, a spokesperson for Fribourg police.
Another police spokesperson mentioned that authorities received accounts of an individual possibly dousing themselves in petrol and self-immolating, although officials confirmed this detail remains unverified.
The Swiss media outlet 20 Minutes reported obtaining a video from the scene where an injured person was quoted as saying: “A man set himself on fire. He poured gasoline over himself and then lit himself.”
Ambulances and helicopters airlifted several victims who had serious injuries to hospitals, while others received medical attention at the location.
Authorities confirmed the bus was run by PostBus, a regional transport service linked to Switzerland’s national postal service.
The victims have not yet been formally identified, and police stated the fire’s circumstances are still being investigated. They also refrained from commenting on any potential terrorism connection, noting it is premature to establish a motive.
