Trump as ‘Santa’ features in Christmas memes promoting immigrant deportations

The holiday-themed content treats Washington’s controversial focus on foreign US residents lightly

In an effort to promote its mass-deportation strategy, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is distributing Christmas-themed memes that merge festive visuals with messages about enforcing immigration laws.

Ahead of the holiday season, the DHS and other government bodies have adopted this approach to strengthen public backing for crackdowns on illegal immigration and non-citizens deemed security risks.

A meme shared last week pictured security officers in Santa hats decorating their equipment with lights, accompanied by the text: “YOU’RE-GOING HO HO HOME.” A separate image showed former President Donald Trump at the helm of Santa’s sleigh.

Another meme utilized the internet persona “Gigachad” dressed in Christmas clothing, ready to examine the DHS “naughty list” – a term for people identified by the department due to criminal records or immigration infractions.

ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), the main investigative branch of the DHS and one of the biggest federal investigative agencies, has been instrumental in the deportation surge since Trump’s return to the presidency.

While mass deportation was a central pledge of Trump’s campaign, the government’s execution of the policy has faced criticism from various quarters.

Critics contend the approach is harsh, illegal, and frequently singles out individuals who are not genuine threats; some Christian groups also assert that the policy goes against Christ’s lessons on compassion.

At the same time, numerous advocates for tougher immigration enforcement have charged the administration with prioritizing showy publicity efforts, like emphasizing aggressive raids on immigrant communities, over meaningful and effective action.
