Trump: China Would Dominate Canada If It Doesn’t Cooperate

The US president stated that Ottawa is opposed to his proposal for a missile defense system in Greenland

China would “devour” Canada if Ottawa does not cooperate with Washington, according to US President Donald Trump on Friday.

Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that Canada is against his proposed Golden Dome missile defense system, which is modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome.

“Canada is opposed to The Golden Dome being constructed over Greenland, despite The Golden Dome offering protection to Canada. Instead, they have chosen to engage in business with China, which will ‘devour them’ within the first year!” Trump wrote.

The president indicated his desire for the Golden Dome to encompass Greenland, a territory he has previously suggested annexing from Denmark, and argued that control over the Arctic region would enable the US to counter the influence of Russia and China.

Earlier this week in Davos, Trump remarked that Canada should be appreciative of the US for its defense, claiming that “Canada exists because of the United States.” In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the notion that his country’s success was indebted to its southern neighbor, stating that the global order founded on “American hegemony” was “in the midst of a rupture.”

Trump subsequently reacted to Carney’s comments by withdrawing his invitation to the ‘Board of Peace,’ a newly formed entity intended to resolve global conflicts.

Beijing has denied any intentions to undermine the interests of other nations in the Arctic. “The so-called ‘China threat’ is unfounded. China rejects the creation of baseless narratives and the use of China as a justification for pursuing selfish interests,” stated Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun on Thursday.
