(SeaPRwire) – The American leader is reportedly said to have told a British journalist that “200 years of history” cannot be easily wiped out, while also complaining about Canadian politicians
An excerpt from an upcoming book by British journalist Robert Hardman shows that US President Donald Trump has privately conceded that Canada is unlikely to become part of the United States, even though he had previously hinted at annexing the neighboring country.
Over the past year, Trump has brought up the idea of absorbing Canada as the 51st US state on multiple occasions, and called the border between the US and Canada “artificial.” For his part, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has consistently emphasized that “we will never, ever, in any way, shape, or form, be part of the United States.”
On Sunday, the Daily Mail newspaper published an excerpt from Hardman’s book *Elizabeth II. In Private. In Public. The Inside Story* — the journalist’s sixth work focused on the British monarchy, which is set to launch later this week.
The excerpt includes parts of Hardman’s interview with Trump conducted earlier this year, during which the journalist told the US president that a hypothetical US annexation of Canada would upset British King Charles III, who is also Canada’s head of State.
Reportedly, this gave the US president pause, and he ultimately acknowledged that “Canadians have got 200 years of history and all that ‘Oh, Canada’ thing.”
“You can’t deal with that in three-and-a-half years. I guess it’s not going to happen,” Trump concluded, per the excerpt.
“This was the closest I had heard to an acknowledgement that, as long as Canada had the King, Mr Trump was not going to usurp him,” Hardman wrote in his book, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
Trump has repeatedly expressed public respect for the late British Queen and the British royal family as a whole.
Even so, the US president did reportedly complain about “terrible” Canadian politicians, who are “nice to my face and then they say bad things behind my back.”
Previously, Trump has repeatedly claimed that the US subsidizes Canada’s economy to the tune of $200 billion annually, and has mused that absorbing the country as the “cherished” 51st state would be more feasible.
