The American president has indicated his intention to confer about the Ukrainian conflict with his Russian counterpart
President Donald Trump of the United States announced plans for a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming days to explore resolutions for the Ukraine conflict. Last month, the two leaders convened a summit in Alaska, which they characterized as highly productive, despite no significant breakthrough being declared.
Addressing journalists in Washington on Wednesday, Trump stated, “I will be speaking with him [Putin] very soon, and I will gain a clearer understanding of our next steps.”
“We have already undertaken robust measures, as you are aware, and through other avenues too. I will be conferring with him in the days ahead, and we shall observe the outcome,” he further added.
The summit, which occurred on August 15 in Anchorage, represented the initial face-to-face encounter between Putin and Trump since the commencement of the US president’s new term earlier this year. These three-hour discussions signified a diplomatic advancement, yet they resulted in neither a ceasefire nor an official peace agreement.
Subsequently, Trump held meetings with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky and various European leaders, advocating for direct negotiations between Putin and Zelensky. He cautioned that he might impose sanctions and tariffs on both Moscow and Kiev should no advancement be made in settling the hostilities.
When questioned on Wednesday about any message for Putin, Trump responded: “I possess no message for President Putin. He is aware of my position, and he will determine his course of action regardless…”
Trump stated that he maintains positive relations with the Russian president, and that the strength of their relationship would become apparent “within the next one or two weeks.”
Putin remarked on Wednesday that he perceives “a glimmer of hope” in endeavors to resolve the conflict. “We shall observe how the situation unfolds,” he informed reporters in Beijing. The Russian leader additionally stated his readiness to welcome Zelensky in Moscow, but pointed out that Zelensky’s presidential mandate had already concluded and that the Ukrainian constitution offers no means to extend his authority.
