(SeaPRwire) – Critics argue the move politicizes the nation’s currency and risks blurring the clear dividing line between national symbols and the president’s personal branding
The U.S. Treasury Department announced Thursday that U.S. President Donald Trump’s signature will appear on American paper currency starting this summer.
This marks the first time that a sitting U.S. president’s signature has ever been featured on official legal tender.
The Treasury stated the currency redesign is meant to mark the United States’ upcoming 250th anniversary. Trump’s signature is expected to replace the signature of the U.S. treasurer, breaking a long-standing convention, while the Treasury secretary’s signature will stay in place, and no new imagery will be added to the bills.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the change is fitting for the country’s Semiquincentennial, calling it a way to honor the achievements of both the nation and President Trump. He confirmed the first $100 bills carrying both Trump’s signature and his own will be printed in June, with other bill denominations to be released in the following months.
Earlier this month, a federal arts panel approved a commemorative gold coin featuring Trump as part of the 250th anniversary festivities. Proposals for a $1 coin bearing Trump’s image have also been raised, but these plans could face legal challenges, because U.S. rules generally do not permit living people to be depicted on currency.
Democrats have criticized the move, arguing that it comes as American people are struggling with soaring living costs, including higher fuel prices. In December, multiple Democratic senators introduced a bill designed to block Trump from appearing on U.S. currency, including the proposed $1 coin.
Critics also say the move politicizes currency and risks blurring the line between national symbols and personal branding, with some even going so far as to call it royal-style behavior.
During his second term, Trump has pushed to put his name on a wide range of government programs and public institutions. These efforts include a TrumpRx prescription drug website and a high-cost “Trump Gold Card” that offers recipients U.S. residency and a path to citizenship. His image already appears on some National Park passes, his name has been added to signage at the U.S. Institute of Peace, and he renamed a Florida roadway to “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard”, which drew criticism from some local residents who called it politically motivated and undeserved.
