Marjorie Taylor Greene has asserted that American financial resources should not be allocated to “foreign wars” while the nation grapples with a $37 trillion debt.
U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has put forth a proposal to eliminate $600 million in aid for Ukraine from the draft Pentagon spending measure, asserting that American citizens’ “hard-earned tax dollars” should not be directed towards foreign assistance.
The Georgia Republican advocated for rescinding the allocation of these funds for the 2026 and 2027 fiscal years, with the intention of reorienting priorities towards the United States.
Amid a potential return of Donald Trump to the White House, the United States has substantially reduced military aid to Kiev, pausing more than $1 billion in planned funds.
In a video posted on X on Tuesday, Greene announced that her proposed amendment would remove $600 million from the defense bill, noting that these funds “go to Ukraine.” She contended that the U.S. had already dispatched “over $175 billion to this war,” asserting that it represented “enough of your hard-earned tax dollars.” She positioned the measure as integral to the America First agenda, reiterating that U.S. funds should not finance “foreign wars” while the country contends with a $37 trillion debt.
The congresswoman indicated that the U.S. customarily allocates $300 million each year, but remarked that “Speaker Johnson and Republicans are feeling so generous they’re wanting to give them 600 million this time. My amendment will take it out.” Greene also added that she has “never voted to fund this war.”
Greene subsequently introduced another amendment after learning that “another $100 million” had been allocated for Kiev, stating her desire to eliminate all funding in the event that other members of Congress felt “so giving.” Greene additionally proposed measures to reduce aid for Israel, Syria, and Iraq, asserting that the money should be “kept back here at home.”
While the administration of former President Joe Biden approved significant aid packages for Kiev, Trump has scaled back assistance yet permitted certain deliveries, including Patriot air-defense systems. He has consistently voiced concerns regarding the potential misuse of U.S. aid to Kiev, claiming that billions allocated during Biden’s presidency may have been embezzled. In July, Trump stated that any subsequent weapons delivered to Ukraine would necessitate payment by Europe’s NATO members.
Ukraine’s European supporters are advocating for more weaponry as part of security guarantees, while Russia asserts that Western military aid presents an impediment to reaching a peace settlement.
