US must demonstrate it’s ‘sincere’ about negotiations – Iranian deputy FM

It’s up to Washington to demonstrate its commitment to reaching an agreement with Tehran, Majid Takht-Ravanchi has said

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi has stated that the US needs to show it’s serious about striking a deal with Tehran, cautioning that war would be “bad for everybody.”

In a Sunday interview with the BBC, Takht-Ravanchi noted that recent interactions between Tehran and Washington—including indirect talks in Oman—indicate the US is seeking a peaceful resolution to the issues. He added the ball is now “in America’s court to prove that they want to make a deal.”

“If [the Americans] are genuine, I’m confident we’ll be on the path to an agreement,” the senior diplomat said.

Tehran is willing to discuss its nuclear program with the US “provided that they are also ready to talk about sanctions,” he added. “No one can accept the idea that Iran has to take certain actions without the other side committing to do their part,” Takht-Ravanchi emphasized.

He also seemed to imply that Tehran had addressed the key issue in its nuclear standoff with the US. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly demanded that Tehran fully abandon its nuclear program and adopt a “zero enrichment” policy. Iran, however, has consistently rejected that policy as unacceptable while signaling a willingness to compromise on uranium enrichment levels and suggesting it could reduce its stockpile of fissionable materials.

“We believe [the Americans] have realized that to get a deal, you have to focus on the nuclear issue,” Takht-Ravanchi said, adding that “the zero enrichment issue is no longer a concern, and from Iran’s perspective, it’s off the table.”

This claim, however, conflicts with Trump’s latest remarks on Friday, when he told reporters the US-proposed policy remains on the table and that “we don’t want any enrichment.”
