HEADS of traffic authorities in the cities of Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, Cebu and Talisay met on Friday, July 29, 2022 to discuss how they can implement a coordinated approach when it comes to managing traffic in the cities that are interconnected to each other.Present in the meeting were Paul Gotiong, executive director of the Cebu City Transportation Office; Rico Rey Francis Holganza, chairman of Cebu City Traffic Operations Management Board; Edwin Jumao-as, executive director of Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue; Mario Napule, chief of Lapu-Lapu City Traffic Management System; and Jonathan Tumulak, current head of City of Talisay-Traffic Operations and Development Authority.The officials discussed various problems in traffic management in hopes of finding solutions.Tumulak, in an interview with SunStar Cebu, said one of the topics they had discussed during the meeting was their preparations for the opening of classes for school year 2022-2023 on Aug. 22.He said they also talked about the possible deputation of barangay tanods so they can issue citation tickets to motorists who violate traffic rules. The traffic official said Talisay City has done this, and it can be replicated in the three other cities.The traffic officials talked about clearing the roadsides — especially those near schools — of structures to make sure the students’ walk is unhampered.Tumulak said they also discussed educating students about traffic rules and road safety and agreed to put pedestrian lanes in streets near all schools.
