Bike lane network more than halfway finished

PHASE one of the bike lane network of Mandaue City is 60 percent complete.

The project is in partnership with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7.

John Eddu Ibañez, Mayor Jonas Cortes’ executive secretary, said the DPWH and the City have already installed bollards and the concrete delineator to separate the bike lane from the other lanes for motorized vehicles.

Ibañez said that not all bike lanes will have bollards or concrete delineators. Others will only have pavement markings.

Plastic bollards are installed on streets like Ouano Ave., where vehicles travel at fast speed, he said. On A.C. Cortes Ave., where vehicles travel much slower because of the many intersections, bollards with concrete delineator are installed.

Aside from Ouano Avenue, streets that will only have bollards are C.D. Seno St., M.C. Briones St., a portion of S.B Cabahug St. and a portion of A.C Cortes Ave. near the Mandaue-Lapu-Lapu Bridge.

Ibañez also identified bike lanes that will only have pavement marking. These are found on a portion of S.B Cabahug St. near City Hall going to A.del Rosario St., Mantawi Drive., E.O Perez St. and Hernan Cortes St.

The City and the DPWH started implementing phase one of the project in December.

In phase two, Ibañez said the City will install bike racks in public places as well as set up more bike repair stations and install pavement markings in bike lanes on barangay roads.

Ibañez said the DPWH is also coordinating with Cebu City and Lapu-Lapu City for an integrated tri-cities bike lane. (KFD)
