‘Buhing Kalbaryo’ organizers assure health protocols are met during performance

ORGANIZERS of this year’s Buhing Kalbaryo in Cebu City have assured they will continue to implement health protocols to ensure that their performance would not be become the stage for Covid-19 transmission. To achieve such, they have required their performers and crew to be fully vaccinated.Elmer “Jojo” Labella, the creative and artistic consultant for this year’s Buhing Kalbaryo, said that even as the city is under Alert Level 1, the whole crew will continue to be compliant with health and safety protocols as a way to protect themselves and their spectators from Covid-19.More than 100 cast members, musicians and production staff have worked together for the realization of this religious activity that had been halted for two years because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Labella added.Labella, brother of the late Mayor Edgardo Labella, said this year’s Buhing Kalbaryo will start at the Archdiocesan Shrine of San Nicolas de Tolentino in Barangay San Nicolas and will conclude at the Espina Compound in Barangay Guadalupe. The Buhing Kalbaryo, often held on Good Friday, retells the story of the passion of the cross this Lenten season through different acts and music that will end up in the reenactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on the cross. This year’s event will also mark the Buhing Kalbaryo’s 25th anniversary as it was initiated by Mayor Michael Rama in 1997.Separately, Rama also assured that security forces and other personnel from the city government will be present to make sure that the event will be peaceful. In his Holy Week message, Rama said it is important that the people should reminisce and remember the passion of Christ.“Let us all be spiritually filled and, most of all, dili nato kalimtan ang atong (we should not forget our) minimum health protocol requirements,” he said.
