Cebu City deploys 60 bike lane guardians

THE Sugbo Bike Lanes Board (SBLB) has deployed 60 bike patrollers to apprehend motorists blocking any parts of the 98-kilometer-long network of bike lanes in Cebu City.

However, for this week, the bike patrollers will only warn motorists who park their vehicles along the bike lane, said SBLB chairman Gerardo Carillo.

The bike patrollers, said Carillo, will start issuing citation tickets to violators next week.

The 60 bike patrollers ar e divided into 20 teams with three members each. They will start to monitor the bike lanes at 6 a.m. and they will end at 8 p.m. every day.

Aside from riding bicycles, the patrollers will utilize motorcycles and four-wheel vehicles in monitoring the bicycle lanes.

Carillo said the bike patrollers can also repair broken bicycles, and respond to road crashes and other emergency situations.

The Cebu City Government hired the patrollers as job order employees to work for SBLB for the purpose of implementing traffic rules in the city. (PAC / KAL)
