Cebu reports more than 500 recoveries on single day

IN A MUCH needed victory amid the pattern of recording high numbers of new cases, Cebu logged a whopping 557 recoveries from the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) on Monday, Feb. 15, 2021.

The Department of Health (DOH) Central Visayas Covid-19 case bulletin for Feb. 15 revealed that Cebu City reported 496 recoveries, offsetting the 103 new cases reported for the day and pulling the number of active cases in the city down to 2,601, from Sunday’s near-3,000 level of 2,993 active cases.

Lapu-Lapu City logged 32 recoveries and six new cases, reducing active cases to 418 from 444.

Cebu Province logged 29 recoveries and 21 new cases, also trimming active cases to 1,094 from 1,102.

Mandaue City reported no recoveries. It logged 36 new cases, however, raising active cases to 638.

For the national figures, the Department of Health (DOH) on Monday, Feb. 15, 2021, reported 1,685 new cases of coronavirus infection, pushing the cumulative case count in the Philippines to 550,860.

In its case bulletin at 4 p.m. Monday, DOH also reported two additional mortalities, the lowest in nearly seven months. The last time DOH reported a mortality count of two in a day was on July 21, 2020.

These new deaths brought the death toll from Covid-19 to 11,517. The case fatality rate decreased to 2.09 percent.

Recoveries were also low at 14, bringing the total to 511,755.

Testing was low, but positivity rate was high. There were 14,982 tests conducted in 24 hours until noon of Feb. 14, of which 1,024 or 6.8 percent yielded positive results.

DOH did not indicate the reasons for the low figures.

New cases

Meanwhile, infections are accelerating in Cebu City and Cebu Province, based on the DOH tracker.

Cebu City continued to post the highest number of new cases, with 1,955 new cases based on onset of illness or date of specimen collection in the last 14 days.

Cebu Province, which came in third spot on Feb. 13, climbed to second place on Feb. 14, with 909 new cases over the same 14-day period.
